• Between May 21st and June 13th, Molecule of Light transformed Sydney’s Barangaroo Reserve into a beacon of light at Vivid Sydney’s 16th edition.

Having first landed in Australia more than a decade ago at Federation Square in Melbourne, Molecule of Light remains one of Levine’s most ambitious artworks of his career. This year it became the largest work ever presented at Vivid Sydney.

Standing 23 metres tall with a 6.5-tonne fluorescent sphere, Molecule of Light occupies the threshold between earth and sky. By day, the sphere, painted with layers of UV-reflective paint, harnesses natural light to create shifting moiré patterns, giving the work a vibrational quality. By night, it transforms into an immersive display of laser light forms, synchronising with the surrounding landscape.

Vivid Sydney marked a new chapter for Molecule of Light. Conceived as a site-specific installation, the work is shaped by the topography of its surroundings. Previously realised within the expansive landscapes Norfolk’s Houghton Hall followed by the Saudi Wadi Namar desert, its arrival in the heart of Sydney highlights Levine’s ability to blend art in a landscape and to animate it.

At its centre, Molecule of Light emits a constant tone pitched at 528Hz - the love frequency associated with healing, harmony, and positive change - audible only when standing directly beneath the piece. Amid the energy and pace of the city, the artwork created a shared space for stillness, contemplation, and connection.
