Stillness at the Speed of Light: The Vinyl Factory
-
A unique collaboration between the iconic Grace Jones and groundbreaking light artist Chris Levine was presented to the public for the first time at The Vinyl Factory Gallery on Poland Street, London. These sensational portraits went on show from 29 April 2010.
Chris Levine, renowned for his historic 3D and still images of Queen Elizabeth II, brought his rare sensibility for light to a new series of stunning 3D portraits of Grace Jones. Stillness at the Speed of Light showcased the extraordinary alchemy between the legendary performer and the progressive artist.
A highlight of the exhibition was a striking 3D image of Grace with her eyes closed — one of several ethereal, sensory portraits, some of which were illuminated by laser. Known for her ability to identify and champion zeitgeist-defining artists such as Andy Warhol, Keith Haring, Jean-Paul Goude, and Eiko Ishioka, Grace Jones extended this tradition through her collaboration with Levine, marking an evolution in the language of portraiture.
The exhibition also served as the launch platform for Grace’s music video Love You to Life, which Levine directed.
