  • Overview
On October 24th, Chris Levine unveils Quadrivium at the fourth edition of Forever is Now, curated by Art D'Egypte. Working with the medium of sunlight for the first time, Quadrivium is the first piece in Levine's latest series "The Divine Intelligence of the Sun".

Unveiled at the sacred Giza pyramid complex, Quadrivium takes its name from the ancient study of arithmetic, geometry, astronomy and sound - believed by the Pythagoreans to be essential for understanding the laws of the universe. Levine was inspired to integrate sunlight into the structure as it is said that the Great Pyramid's latitude exactly matches the speed of light, one of the many coincidences that have led people to believe the Ancient Egyptians were deeply spiritually in tune with the universe.

Standing at 4m high, Quadrivium uses the ratios and geometries derived from the Great Pyramid of Khufu, each element proportionally echoeing the pyramid's dimensions and angles. The two dichroic glass discs and one copper disc, connected by a steel pole, are sized relative to each other, according to the diameters of the Earth and the Moon.

As sunlight moves over the reflective discs, rays are refracted back creating an oval-shaped shadow on the ground and the structure's square-shaped base, made from the same locally-sourced quarried granite used in the pyramids' construction. At one point annually, shadows will entirely cover the base, which could, says Levine, solve the ancient geometric conundrum of 'Squaring the Circle'.

To accompany the sculpture, a series of prints inspired by Levine's reseach was released and exhibited at Art D'Egypte's satellite exhibition The Cairo International Art District (CIAD). For enquiries, please email studio@chrislevine.com.

"The Ancient Egyptians lived through their third eye, which connected the physical and spiritual worlds, so they could tap into earth energy. In our modern world, this connection is beyond most of our understanding because our bandwidth of perception is quite limited. We're so distracted by things we can feel and touch and are disconnected from our hearts because we deal only with what's in the here and now. Through my work, I try to connect with a more divine realm that's beyond the distractions of modern life and, in a very modest way, enable people to connect with something much bigger, even just for a moment. This work has resonance and harmony to the Great Pyramid, that will help people tune into something that is beyond our understanding." - Chris Levine
